The Legend of the Mazda RX-7: From Rotary Revolution to JDM Icon

The Mazda RX-7 Legacy: FB, FC, and FD — A JDM Icon Through the Ages

If you’re a fan of JDM cars, rotary engines, or the Initial D anime series, then the Mazda RX-7 needs no introduction. From the first-gen SA22C/FB to the legendary FD3S, this rotary-powered sports car left an unforgettable mark on both street and track culture.

At Custom Car Poster Shop, we’re celebrating the legacy of the RX-7 with exclusive Mazda RX-7 posters, crafted for true enthusiasts who appreciate every curve, pop-up headlight, and high-revving moment.

First Generation: Mazda RX-7 FB (1978–1985)

The RX-7’s journey began in 1978 with the SA22C, later known as the FB. This lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe was designed around the revolutionary 12A rotary engine, delivering a smooth, high-revving experience that immediately set it apart from traditional piston-powered sports cars.

With its classic pop-up headlights, compact design, and perfect weight balance, the RX-7 FB quickly earned a reputation for affordable performance—and became one of the earliest heroes of classic JDM culture.

Second Generation: Mazda RX-7 FC (1986–1992)

The second-gen RX-7 FC3S brought a more refined and performance-driven evolution to the platform. Powered by the 13B rotary engine, available in turbocharged variants, the FC stepped up in power and handling—taking on rivals like the Porsche 944 with confidence.

Mazda added more tech, better suspension, and sharper lines. The FC became a favourite in motorsport, particularly in drifting.

Third Generation: Mazda RX-7 FD (1992–2002)

The final RX-7 generation—the FD3S—is widely considered the peak of rotary-powered performance. Featuring a 13B-REW twin-turbo rotary engine, sculpted curves, and razor-sharp handling, the FD became one of the most revered 90s JDM cars.

Its high-revving engine and balanced chassis made it a monster on the track and a star in pop culture.
